Are you a specialist or just kidding yourself?

Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Hackathon the first ever marathon dedicated to the SQL Server 2016. It is also the only such event dedicated to broader analysis, based on the components of the Microsoft data platform. Whether you are a programmer, a database administrator or a Business Intelligence specialist - or just a geek - you can strive for victory and secure immortality (there are spoils to be shared!). The rules are simple: score the most points and win the overall crown – though additional honors are bestowed on the winners of each stage. During the hackathon, seminars with masters and experts who will discuss the latest functionality of MS SQL Server 2016 will also be held. And that’s not all! - but the rest is a surprise.

What’s new in T-SQL

Something new in T-SQL relates to the introduction of new solutions which go up against the rapidly changing business reality. Changes made to MS SQL 2016 allow for the use of solutions based on the exchange of data using JSON, making versioning possible through the Temporal Table mechanism for data and the Query Store for queries, Live Query Statistics, and finally further changes to the Columnstore Index. And that’s what this session refers to.

Speaker - Maciej Szymański

Critical Microsoft database technology freak. For many years now he has been a certified trainer in MS SQL (MCT, MCITP, MCSE) technology associated with Altkom; and he also implemented solutions and administered MS SQL databases. He combines his work as a coach and consultant with the promotion of MS SQL technology on social media.

Competition paths

ETL process

Creation of the most efficient ETL process performing individual competition tasks in line with the attached specifications and business requirements using Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services, the Microsoft SQL Server 2016 engine itself, and writing effective T-SQL queries.

Data Analysis

Preparation of the process of knowledge discovery using Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services 2016, Microsoft SQL Server + R or Power BI + R and knowledge of various algorithms for knowledge discovery, dealing with specific issues pertaining to data analysis and responding to specific questions and problems. The analyses are carried out on the basis of a data set prepared specifically for this purpose.

Data Visualization

Preparation of the most interesting reports (in graphical and operational terms) and cockpits in the Power BI service using the latest version of Power BI Desktop with either ready-made or one’s own additional visualizations and implementation of the charts from the R program. The visualization will present a graphic image of the set of data, or data which users will be able to find on the Internet at their discretion and add to the model by means of Power Query, supplied for the competition. Some tasks will also concern the new reporting functionality of Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services 2016 tools.

T-SQL Queries

A series of tasks related to improving performance of inquiries and procedures, prepared for the competition, and thoroughly checking the knowledge of users in the field of inquiry optimization, database, and the database server itself, as well as the knowledge of the internal structures of login and capturing server activity.

Administration

A set of problems associated with server administration and databases focusing on advanced knowledge of the configuration and repair of the damaged server, database and backup. Tasks will focus, among other things, on the detection of bottlenecks and faulty configuration and repair of non-functional structures and objects.
